How Shipping Container Delivery Works in Ontario

Buying a shipping container is straightforward. Getting it delivered to your property is where most people have questions. Here’s exactly how the process works in Ontario.

The Equipment: Tilt-Deck Truck

Shipping containers are delivered by a tilt-deck truck. The flatbed tilts down at the rear, and the container slides off onto the ground. No crane required — the truck does all the work. For a 40ft container, you’ll want at least 60–70 feet of clear space for the truck to maneuver.

Preparing Your Site

Ground surface: Gravel or compacted ground is ideal. Soft or wet ground can cause the container to sink.

Access: The delivery truck is 50–65 feet combined length. Low-hanging branches, tight gates, and narrow laneways can create problems — mention any restrictions when you book.

Level ground: A slight slope for drainage is fine, but significant slope will cause doors to swing open or shut on their own.

The Delivery Process

  1. Scheduling — typically a few business days after you confirm
  2. Driver calls ahead on delivery day
  3. You direct exact placement within the truck’s constraints
  4. Walk around with the driver and confirm the doors work
